BMW 5 Series(Europe): Further expansion of the model range.
The BMW 540i Saloon with its V8 power unit, the 530xd all-wheel-drive diesel, and the 520d featuring a four-cylinder diesel are now rounding off the 5 Series. The engines in the new top-of-the-range 550i and 530d have also been revised and upgraded to an even higher standard. And last but not least, new equipment, new colours and new options supplement the wide range of updates and new features.

BMW 5 Series: the 540i Saloon.
The new 4.0-litre V8 in the 540i develops maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 390 Nm/287 lb-ft, accelerating the 540i to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and providing a top speed 250 km/h or 155 mph. Fuel consumption is a moderate 11.0 ltr/100 km or 25.7 mpg Imp (composite EU cycle).

Top-of-the-range 550i with V8 power unit replacing the 545i.
The upgraded V8 power unit in the new 550i develops maximum output of 270 kW or 367 hp, with superb torque of 490 Nm/361 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm. The 550i accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, completing the interim dash from 80?120 km/h in fourth gear in just 5.2 seconds. Fuel consump tion in the EU test cycle, finally, is a modest 11.1 ltr/25.4 mpg Imp, quite un usual for a car of this calibre.

Both eight-cylinder models come as standard with a manual six-speed gear box. Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an op tion on both models, with BMW's six-speed SMG Sequential Manual Gear box being reserved to the BMW 550i.

I note on the UK website that the 540i is only available in 'M Sport' model. The 550i is available as both SE and Sport... Strange!

Although I have my eye on a 540i M Sport!!!

On the 550i configuratin, I notice you cannot have any gearbox except for the Auto, but you have to pay extra for it.

Indeed! I believe the manual gearbox comes later once they have made a version that doesn't get shredded by all the power and torque...

I think it's great that they're bringing the 530xd to the UK - just wish they'd started with the 535d !! About to place my order and then get DMS to breath on it

Perhaps not imminently... the 525d, while only 177bhp, puts out 400nm of peak torque - more importantly, it is an inline 6, and is vastly more refined than the 4-pot 2.0d (which I'd wager is going to feel a bit strained and rough in the 5er), and as such can still be viewed as a significant 'step up the ladder'. Also, it was only just uprated during the E39 > E60 transition.

The 525d (and 535d?) should receive similar updates as the 530d just has... (218bhp to 231bhp = +6%) Lighter weight and modified injectors. When is the question...?
