Whilst of course it inconveniently gets in the way of trashing BMW NA or "marketing", Veight has the right reason. The appearance of early 2007s in the US was reportedly due to an emissions recertification requirement.

That's not really a reason to change a MY designation. That can only be done "for real" by the one that manufacturers the car...

It is if you want to avoid having to through the same process next year. The recertification was mandatory and by submitting it as an 07 it cleared the the models for the next calendar year too. And not to labor the point but as a directly controlled subsidiary BMW NA is about as "real" as the manufacturer for these purposes!

The factory closes in October, every year. They do some maintenance and prepare for the new MY, the changes.
This is EVERY year the same.
Minor things might be changed/introduced somwhen else. But the "BMW-Year" begins in September when the factory gets back to normal production. Therefore, MY change is allways September.
BMW NA is doing this very often for strange marketing BS reasons. But in fact, it is no "real" MY change.
I guess you meant "The factory closes in August"...

As I said, and Veight said, the real reason was that it stemmed from a legislative requirement coupled with the commercial sense to handle it in such as way as to not have to do the exact same thing next year.

This is EVERY year the same.
I understand the historical reasons but there is no real reason that the next MY ALWAYS starts with the Sept. build.
