Dealer called me today to tell me I was near 50K and I should consider an extended warranty. Car has 49.5K miles on it. I already have the extended maintenance agreement that extends the coverage to 100k or 6 years. The extended warranty will do the same. He said the warranty from BMW will cost about 2K. I purchased the car in Apr 05'. Basically this will buy me 2.5 yrs of warranty. I plan on keeping the car for atleast that long. So is the extended warranty worth the expense?

I think it really depends if you got the money to fix it if need be and how has the car been to this point. As I'm sure you know it doesn't take much in these cars to add up real quick to over 2K. I think you may also want to factor in how much your driving each year and what your future money issues may be. A tranny blows out and you could be looking at 5K+ quite eaisly.

It's really up to you in the end. Its a great piece of mind.

P.S.: Love BMW's and the way they drive........but....it really erks me on how much simple things cost to fix. I'm quite a bit a DIY guy but it bugs me knowing that if a tranny goes it can cost you 10K. When most cars it can be done for a few grand.

Will this be a BMW warranty? Are they going to CPO? your car more or less?

From the sounds of it you're looking at an aftermarket warranty. There are many posts devoted to this alternative. BMWs are wonderful when under factory warranty; CPO (BMW) is helpful. Work the numbers, you know your car and what and how you drive it, and roll the dice. Say, if you could tolerate $3000 in repairs during the next 2.5 years an aftermarket warranty might be break even. If, on the other hand you have a major system failure (like transmission) a good warranty could save a bit of your financial butt.

Pay attention to the details - like deductibles. And BMW and aftermarket warranty don't always cover repairs for some pretty expensive electronics.

At least you already have your regular scheduled maintenance plan to keep the day to day maintenance covered!

Not sure what CPO is, but what we spoke about over the phone the dealer described as "the same warranty you'd get on a certified BMW". Thoughts? BTW, the car has been wonderful, no mechanical issues to date.
