The dreaded 50,000 miles is only 250 miles away and I've not found an extended warranty that I believe provides good bang for the buck, so I'm going bare. My car is an '06 E60 in excellent condition and I just had it in to the dealer for it's last oil change and service. I had them check all of the engine seals and the front and rear suspension bushings. Everything was in good shape. Is there anything else I should do or have them check before it goes out of warranty? Thanks.

Get a warranty policy.
I've never owned a BMW without some sort of warranty after 50K as I've only bought CPO. I have to say that from 50K to 100K I've had minimal problems with both the E36 and E46 limited to things such as a window regulator (both)E36 and E46, a fuel pump (E36), seat heater element (E36), an alternator (E36), A/C valve leak inside dashboard (E46). I have no experience with the E60 as I have not reached the 50K mark, but I will have the benefit of 2 more years and additional 50K warranty for major failures.

I am a stickler for frequent and thorough maintenance and this might be the reason for not having any major engine/tranny problems on the earlier cars. The jury is still out on the E60, but I would imagine that with the proper fluid/oil changes the engine itself should be bullet-proof. I anticipate that most of the problems with the E60 will be electrical in nature and may have their fair share of sensor failures since they have so many of them all around the car. It's a crap shoot. Personally, if I've had a car since brand new and know the exact maintenance performed on the car and the car has been very reliable, I would probably forgo the extended warranty, but I would keep the cost of insurance in an interest bearing account and use that account for repairs.

I would probably never drive a car past 50K without warranty if I was not the original owner and this is why I buy exclusively CPO if I go the used car route. Good luck with your decision. Sounds like you have had a very reliable car so far, and I don't see why it should change if you perform the proper maintenance.

I got the extended warranty (good to 100K miles) on my '04 545i a couple years ago just before reaching 50,000 miles. Two months after the new warranty my transmission went out and they replaced it under warranty, no questions asked. Since that time I've also had a valve job, the engine idle controller replaced, an O2 sensor replaced, and a cracked coolant expansion tank replaced under warranty (including towing to the dealership). The warranty has paid for itself 3 times over!

I'm now near 92,000 miles and starting to stress about what to do next. I love this car and I'm not very impressed with the F10 spy shots I've seen, so I don't really want to trade this in on the new model. I also don't know if I want to buy the current e60 in the final model year. But I don't think I can trust driving this car after the warranty expires.

Does anyone know if BMWUSA offers another extended warranty past 100K miles?

1. Getting ext. warranty is only worth it if you buy CPO from BMW (you have to be the original owner, otherwise, its just a 3rd party limited coverage). Otherwise, you're better off self-insuring - putting a couple of grand aside to make sure you're prepared. E60's have been reported to be quite reliable bet 50 and 100k miles. Significantly more times than not the cost of the aftermarket warranty is more than what you'd spend in repairs.

1 1/2. Extended service contracts are even less justified cost - your scheduled maintenance is very unlikely to top what the contract usually costs.

2. no company I know of offers a reputable policy for e60's after 100k miles.
