At what mileage do spark plugs have to be changed, and is this a high ticket item$$$?

BMW recommendation is 100,000 miles. I usually change mine around 30K (not on my E60 yet). I have seen prices from $7.50 to $14.00 each. Not an expensive item to take care off. Its an easy DIY and you can also see the old plugs to have an indication of the condition of the engine.
