I shopped my BMW Center today. Priced for BMW CCA member. Rear axle E60 530i Sport.

DIY:
Brake pads $84
Wear sensor $21
Rotors $172
Guide bolt bushing kit $34
Allen screw $2
Anti-squeal compound, free
TOTAL $313 + tax

Installed $493 (parts + labor with CCA discount, comes with 2 year unlimited mile defect warranty)

For me, DIY saves $180 of labor cost, but no 2-year warranty.

It would be safe to assume you have not seen a brake sensor mounted on a new brake pad before. There is no way a brake sensor can wear at all on a new brake pad unless it is mounted incorrectly.

This will give you an idea what a new brake pad and sensor looks like. look at how much the pad will have to wear just to start touching.

Thanks for the helpful picture. When the contact occurs, does it just report the contact, or will the electrical resistance change as the sensor becomes more worn? The reason I ask is that my front brake sensor count down normally, then went from 10,000 miles to 3,400 in a day. Previously, I noticed the rear sensor went from 6,xxx miles to 3,000 miles in a couple of days. I have purchased a set of front and rear sensors ($16 ea) and brake pads. I am planning to take a look at them when I change out my winter wheels.
