Marketwatch.com at 6;04 PM Today announced BMW is recalling 2,000 large engine vehicles including"the V8 5 Series built between May 12 and July 6
The 545i I am taking delivery on tomorrow was built right in the middle of these dates, JUNE 15
The defect is very serious in that they state to immediatly STOP DRIVING THE CAR.
If your car was built between these dates listen up.

They say"If the car should stall because of the engine control defect, the driver WILL lose all power steering and power BRAKING". Drivers must stop driving immediatly and contact BMWNA Relations at once.
The automaker will offer customers alternate transportation.
Do I take delivery tommorow or forget about it? Guess I find out more tomorrow

don't take delivery! your dealer will know about this and should offer you a loaner until the car is fixed. It's been discussed on this board and I saw someone on another board who was scheduled for delivery, but the dealer contacted them and delayed it. That's how I hope your dealer would handle it.

My Car is at the VPC and will have the chip changed out there. I've been told that "sold"cars have priority over "unassigned "cars manufactured on these dates and will be fixed first. If your delivery is tomorrow go pick up a loaner and ask the dealer to fix yours ASAP. Good luck

I picked up my car March 7th, so I don't think my car is affected. If it were though, I'd be pretty disappointed and would prefer a new car rather than simply having it fixed.

I couldn't recall my build date and spoke to the dealership this morning. They had no knowledge of the recall so I read them the news report. I have an April build date so no issues for my car. Somewhat disconcerting that they weren't aware of a recall that includes a directive to stop driving the vehicle.

Anybody know what VIN number ranges are affected? My car is at the prep center right now, and i'm pretty sure it's build date was late May. Will they fix it at the prep center?

I'm pretty sure they will fix it at the prep center, since the problem is too serious.

There are some other factors on this issue - ... V8 and V12 engines *ONLY* are affected. Your service center has a way to determine if your car is affected (e.g. the build date of the DME)... It sounds like there may be some out of order VIN's... In other words call your dealer service center ask them if your car is affected.

Some rough info, PLEASE assume that this range is a rough idea if your car is affected. Your service center will know if your DME is actually of the build date that is affected. It is quite possible cars in this range may have an older or newer DME that is NOT AFFECTED by this issue...
