From my experience, it's a big headache to sell a car through cars.com and autotrader. Be prepared to be bombarded for months with phone calls and emails asking you if you're willing to accept trade in's or set up a monthly payment. For those people who actually have money, mostly likely they'll low ball to an offer which is at or a little above auction price (even below auction price). If you owe money on the car, you have the headache of waiting for the lien release which the buyer needs to register the car and that takes at least 2-3 weeks. If you can find a dealer that can offer you even a 1 thousand above auction, I would go for it.
Although my experience is with the UK based autotrader.co.uk, it wasn't good. I was selling a Daewoo (I know I know) and I was inundated with phone calls, mostly of nigerian origin, wanting to send me cheques thru the post for a car they had never seen. It was all a scam and never fell for it. However, we also had a couple of people who were very insistant on seeing the car, if not very threatening. One of them made us laugh though as he phoned up and said "I'm in my car driving to your place, where do you live?", I said "Where are you coming from?", he said "Do not worry about that, just give me directions!"... I'm thinking .. "starting from where?!".. needless to say we never met the guy.

We finally sold the car to a Senior Police Inspector working in the Serious Fraud Office who enlightened us about the scams. He was the one and only genuine buyer. It's probably the last time I'll be using autotrader as a seller.

I had my e39 listed on cars.com and had maybe 2 calls over 3 months or so. What generated the most traffic was parking it in a secure and high traffic location with a for sale sign on it. Might be worth driving it to work for a while, if your office is on a major thoroughfare, so it would get some exposure but you wouldn't be leaving it unattended for extended periods. Also you can tell interested parties that they can drive by and look, and then schedule a test drive if they are really interested...

I've posted on Craigslist and Autotrader. Craigslist had more hits, but it ended up selling on Autotrader in about 3 weeks.
