If you browse through the postings on this board it's easy to find advice about how to maintain your car. Generally the advice for people who are leasing is to follow BMW's schedule. For people who are going to keep their cars for a long time, extra maintenance is usually advised. Trouble it, that information is scattershot. Does there exist a schedule of maintenance tasks that includes everything all in one place?

I'm thinking this would take a form something like this:
  • Post-breakin oil change: BMW schedule: Never Recommendation: 1200-2000 miles
  • Regular oil change: BMW schedule: 15000 miles Recommendation: 7000 miles
  • Rotate tires: BMW schedule: Never Recommendation: Never
  • Change differential oil: BMW schedule: Never Recommendation: 100000 miles
  • Wash car: BMW schedule: Never Recommendation: Hourly-Monthly
  • Take out garbage: BMW schedule: Daily Recommendation: Hourly
  • and so on...

This would certainly be a useful summary. I've tried searching but didn't find one. Does it exist? If not, are there any experts who would take a shot at creating it?

You can send an e-mail to Mike Miller (BMW CCA Roundel Magazine Technical Editor) requesting the "Old School" maintenance schedule at auspuf2002@aol.com. Let him know the year/model of your car.

He doesn't publish it because, in his words, "...periodically I have to update the document. For example, BMW is constantly changing their operating fluid specifications, and new model BMWs nowadays have idiosyncrasies that have to be noted -- like the E90 family 3 Series with no drain plug in the differential cover."

Thanks, I'll give Mike a shout. It'll be interesting to see if he has updated it for a 2008 535xi.

Well, he has for a 2008 535i, so I'd say yes.
