Just got an email from my dealer. I'm putting together a ED 550. He wrote me to tell me that he got some more information this morning.

Specifically, he got the new pricing information:
US MRSP: $57,400.00
ED MSRP: $53,380.00

Additionally, ED contacted him to tell him that the manual transmission is on "indefinite" hold. However, they did say that SMG was an option, and specifically asked him to ask me if I wanted the SMG or the Automatic.

He also has the options price-list, which I will get a copy of on Friday and post if someone else hasn't already.

How to exaplin the contradiction about SMG availability?

Cooool! SMG is right there! Invoice ED is about $50K. Just wait for a few months before ordering.

On German Car fans in the 5 series section there is this info from a reliable poster.
NOTE: THE SMG AND MANUAL GEARBOXES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE IN SEPTEMBER US PRODUCTION ON THE 550I, BMW ANTICIPATES THAT PRODUCTION WILL RESUME IN OCTOBER!!!!!!
Here's a link to the entire post.

When the ED dept. offered you the choice of SMG what month production was it going to be? My friend is trying to order a 650 ED (Sep. or Oct. production Oct. or Nov. pick up) and might go for the SMG, but all the info so far indicated that both Manual and SMG were to start production in Oct for other markets, but it was not clear if that also applied to the US models.

So much for the SMG. I've gotten a second communique from BMW ED now saying that even the SMG is *not* an option!?!?!

-------
Hi Karim,

Well, the plot thickens! We just found out that SMG is on indefinite
hold along with the manual transmission, so the automatic is all that is
available at this time. Unfortunately, we didn't receive any explanation.
--------

Given this new information, I'm putting my ED 550 order on "indefinite hold". I've never driven an automatic in my life; and have no real intentions of starting now.

I too have no plans of buying another automatic...one is enough. Well it looks likes maybe I will just have to hold out for an M5 with a6 speed manual tranny. Damn the luck!

I recently had decided that I couldn't quite justify the price of the M5. I'm really upset about the fact that there is no transmission choice on the 550. Does anyone have any suspected dates for a fixinh of this problem? I'm going to go test drive a M45 this week to see if they'll offer a way out of this problem... but if I knew that simply delaying ED until next March/April would give me a manual or ZSG transmission option; I'd gladly wait...

I'm sure they'll offer manual and SMG or ZSG soon... its just a new engine so they're prob still working out the power issue with the transmission making sure the transmission can handle the extra power. Maybe you'll get a new BETTER transmission on the 550 than the current ZF one.
