Just curious but why don't you guys just let your teen drive as an "unnamed driver?" If there?s an accident there would be a higher deductible but worth it given the rates. Or is this not allowed in the US?

One idea is to buy a junker( 4th car) and put your kids name on it for insurance purposes and of course not get collision on the junker. The your kid drives the 3rd car and is covered by the collision coverage on that car. Then if your kid dents any of the other 3 cars they are covered on those.. The problem is where do you park the junker that won't get driven anyway?
so are you saying that i dont have to put my son on my bmw's insurance, and he can still drive it? I was initially going to put him on my 98 accord only, but that is my work car and i take that car to work everyday, and that would basically make no sense for him to have his license and pay inurance only to drive the car on weekends....

im 16 and i started driving without insurance for about 10 months before my parents just put me in the insurance now, its pretty expensive though because with hardly any "driving experience" prices are that high.....dont start with that mommy and daddy crap, i never asked for this car until my parents purchased it during the summer and I found out that I would be driving the car and it would be mine......everything that has been done to my car was with my money that I worked for and monthly payment my dad pays for because I help out and work at our business.....with hardwork and dedication anything is possible

That is cheap. When I first got my e60, I was 18, and I had to pay $3000 already with the good student discount..

Im in the UK, and as a balanced view in comparison, my son drives a 1.4 litre sub compact. He is 18 and been driving for 15 months (you need to be 17 to drive here). His first year insurance was $3000 and the second was $1800. This is a car with (first year) 50 horsepower, with the 1.4 litre at 77 horsepower.

We group cars in terms of 1-20 where 20 is a ferrari, jag coupe, or similar. His 1.4L is group 4, my 520d is 15, and a M5 would be 19-20 for example.

We got initial quotes for the 50 hp car as a 17 year old up to $9000.

So, looking at what it would cost him to drive my 163 hp 5 series, I got the below (approx $15,000). This is with his own car available as well, 3 car family, 5k miles a year on the BMW.

So all your quotes look pretty good in comparison.

Please don't take this as a bash, but you are in an extreme case of denial. Mommy and daddy crap is totaly the case here. Whether you asked for it or not, they got you the car. Which is the point some people are making. Now the mods you do on your own, good on you. But the fact is that your parents purchased a 40K+ car for you. Please don't tell me that what you do for your father is comparable to a 40k+ job? In any regard, congrats and yes, anything is possible with hard work and dedication

BTW, I'm 25.. 23 when I bought my car.
