The only possible way to make this an apples to apples comparison of rates would be to list the coverage for each line item...

Sorry for the partial hi-jack...

Of note, our neighbor's daughter (17) in a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant is over $300/month

How do you 18-20 something year olds have that kind of cash to buy a 5 series? Please let me know what the secret is, but make sure it is all legit.

I have to pick up my car tomorrow, but I have to get insurane so far the lowest I've seen here in NYC is $2019 from Geico. How the hell are you people getting all these spectular prices on insurance? are these prices I'm seeing part of the joys of living in New York City?

As Veight points out, if you have more drivers than cars it won't be too bad. But my 16.5 year old daughter is driving the A4 now, so we have three cars and three drivers. We kept the collision for now but bumped the deductibles all around to a more realistic level. We're almost exactly at $200/mo but I also included loan gap for the e60 and roadside assitance for the ladies. But I was thinking about an umbrella before and didn't pursue it, and based on Veight's comment I'll probably be kicking myself soon. Sounds like that may be a very good way to go, especially wih my son turning 15 in another month.

BTW- Good grades and in some cases approved driving shools can help take a few points off the total as well. Make sure you take your son to the teen driver Street Survivor school by BMWCCA or something similar in any case. It might open his eyes and make it less likely he'll run into (so to speak) any problems that will make things really expensive.

Good luck!

One idea is to buy a junker( 4th car) and put your kids name on it for insurance purposes and of course not get collision on the junker. The your kid drives the 3rd car and is covered by the collision coverage on that car. Then if your kid dents any of the other 3 cars they are covered on those.. The problem is where do you park the junker that won't get driven anyway?

For those that live in the Tri-State Area or NY Metro Area, TSC Direct is supposed to be really cheap. I see their ads all the time on the LIRR. According to their ad's, they are $400/year cheaper than Geico, which is considered one of the best deals in the area. Personally, I use Geico and think they are great. I pay around $2400/year for 2 cars/2 drivers, but I'm also 33 and have a solid driving record. Here's the link for TSC, in case anyone is interested... TSC DIRECT
