Today I discovered that the rear tyre on the right hand side was incorrectly mounted to the rim. The inside was turned out. The tyres have never been off since the car arrived from the factory - so clearly - something must have gone wrong in Dingolfing.

We tried to visit a tyre dealer after being told to do so by our dealer, but tyre "experts" weren't able to turn the tyre. They had the appropriate equipment, but not the knowledge on how to take the tyre off the rim. Pretty annoying. Now we have to wait for this tyre dealer to receive a CD with instructions on how to handle the switch.

Anyone else with 124 style rims and run-flats experienced anything like this?

No, but now you have me worried, and I'm going to have to run out to my car and check it out.

A visual check for correct mounting of Dunlop, directional, run-flat, tires is easy to do. Look for the word OUTSIDE embossed on the sidewall as in the picture below. Or inspect the tread to see that the water grooves are mounted toward the inside and the handling grooves are on the outside.

Aware of that and how to do it - as I did discover one tyre incorrectly fitted.

The dealer has now decided to replace both rear tyres, and to claim these from BMW.

I just couldn't understand the purpose of your post. Neither your quotation of what I posted.

AFAIK the SP Sport 01 isn't directional.

I think we're talking semantics here.

The following quote from the "please note" area of the asymmetric description on Dunlop's site surely applies to the tires mounted on our cars:

Some tyres are both asymmetrical and directional. These tyres carry markings on the sidewall which
a.) indicate the correct direction of rotation and b.) identify the inner- and outward-facing sides.
Failure to observe these instructions will impair tyre performance. The above recommendations will also apply.
