Carfax is worthless -- unless it identifies the car as some sort of salvage title or something severe, you really can't put much stock in it.

Your best bet when buying a used car is to have it examined by a professional to see if there is any hidden issues that could come back and haunt you later...

+1 a reputable dealer inspection (it'll cost you less than $100) is invaluable ... and coax them to run the service and warranty work record on the VIN.

The inspection is probably the NY Motor Vehicle Inspection ... the accident could be a minor scrape or a major repair; if it was more or a total there would probably be a "salvage" notation.

Again, the main flaw with Carfax is that they don't get information from insurance companies so any "clean" car could have had extensive damage and bodywork done (more than once) and it wouldn't show up on the report...

Rudy is 100% correct. I just bought my 545i two months back, and carfax is really only good to verify if its been in a REPORTED collision. My car had a "clean" carfax report, but after taking a close look at the passenger rear door, there was significant bondo repair done. If you're buying the car out of state, IMO its worth you paying a few hundred bucks to check it out yourself, or having a professional do it for you. I checked my car out myself, for peace of mind. Another good tool would be to find out where the car was serviced, and ask BMW to give you the maintenance history. Not all BMW dealers will do this, but you can try and see how much info you can get. Good luck!

Well said, lots of states dont report accidents, some do. Its unfortunate for some owners that get his at anothers fault, and they suffer the damage when it appears on Carfax as a collision...could have just been a tap on the bumper, but if the police file a report, some owners are screwed.
