I don't remember exactly; it's under service or some such thing. It's easy to find; just do a few clicks and scrolls or whatever.

Press menu button (near gear shifter) to get to the main menu, press I-drive controller (select i-menu), scroll to SERVICE, press i-drive controller, oil service should be the first choice on the menu. When the counter reaches 0 the color changes to red. Mine is at -120 miles right now.

That and you'll see it pop up for about 3 secs in the middle LCD screen on the instrument cluster when you FIRST start up the car.

So, what's the consensus here? Be pro active (conservative?) and change the oil after the break-in period? In his Tech Talk column (Roundel, Feb. 2006), Mike Miller recommends doing a break-in service at 1,200 miles changing the engine oil and "lifetime fill" gearbox and differential oils. He writes his 325Ci was "FULL of metal". I plan to keep my 5er beyond the included scheduled maintenance period and figure it'll be cheap insurance.

Gear box and differential oil used to be part of the 64,000 miles major service, back in the 70s and 80s, but I'm not sure that those kinds of details are spelled out in the new service manuals; guess we should check. It sounds as though this columnist suggests an early--but forever--single change. I guess he has that much faith in synthetic gear oils now, because once the metal shavings are out after breakin flushing, he doesn't seem to worry about viscosity breakdown--the real reason to change any oil after a while.

Cheers,
Ray Hull

As someone who has yet to take delivery, doesn't the dealership pay for the oil on the scheduled maintenance? I was under the impression it was all covered in the 4 year 50k miles?

Waiting for my Mystic Blue 530i....

Do a search--this topic has been debated here many times.

I've always changed the oil/filter in my cars after break in (~2,000 miles) to remove the break in gunk, and then twice as often as recommended by the manufacturer. With my 545i I had it changed at 3,000 miles (I paid and told them to not reset the service interval clock). I've got 10,500 miles now and the car says it needs an oil service in 600 miles. I'll have oil/filter changed after another 6,000 miles (I'll pay, no service interval clock reset), etc. I agree, cheap insurance.

break-in was done at 1200kms, now it is over 16.000km and no oil change, no indicators on, in service it says that after 10000km I will need to change, car is 5 month new, and car was in service for installing spoliers and checking front breaks and they wear a bit...

but no SW update yet and no oil change....
