I've had my 2005 545i for a little over two weeks now. I got it with 63k miles and no extended warranty. I did get the car checked out before buying by one the best bmw guys in my area and he said it looked great and saw no current problems and didn't see anything that would be coming up soon that would need to be done.

I was wondering everyone's opinions on getting an extended warranty? I understand that its likely smart to go ahead and get it, but what are the big things that I can plan on having to pay for in the next 40k that would be covered under such a warranty? Is it likely that I'll get value out of the warranty if I purchase one?

And if the consensus is yes, which warranty companies are the best? I've heard plenty of horror stories of 'extended warranty scams'. Just wondering about reputable ones to go with.

Thanks in advance!

Get one and ask your BMW dealer. They are all scams, but you just have to be smart. BTW, these f'in cars are way expensive to fix. unlessyou have a money tree in those pants, go for an extended. Would have recommedned a CPI car if you didn't already have one. GL

Get a warranty. My bank offered one at purchase and I picked it up quickly. My biggest driver was the fact that I can't affor the three hours of labor to remove all the plastic to get to the motor...

Get a drivetrain warranty at the very least....

Thumbs down

In my experience the V-8 BMW's have some repair and maintenance issues as the miles move up there. This is not a criticism of the product - they are complex machines. Electronics aren't getting any simpler. That said I recommend you shop for an extended warranty program. Be sure to examine what coverages are provided.

From Old Republic Insurance Company in Canada.

Based on you
purchasing your warranty with at least 2000 kms remaining on your factory warranty and two
months. This warranty is the Gold coverage which is basically bumper to bumper, and covers virtually
every factory installed part except wear parts (brake pads, light bulbs, etc.) and includes a 0 deductible.

4 years/120,000 kms $2419
5 years/120,000 kms $2661
6 years/120,000 kms $2918

Warranty is transferable, so it will enhance your resale value as well.

I will be getting the 6 year/120,000 Kms warranty. Current mileage 37,000 kms
