Did you actually read the contract or did you simply ask the dealer? I will have to get the paper contract from my friend but when I was selling my wife's X5 to him, I took out an extended warranty as a sweetner for the deal. My dealer explained some electronics such as the iDrive and radio are NOT covered by the BMW warranty. I only briefly skimmed the contract before handing it over with the old X5 but I do recall seeing language that seemed to back up my dealer's remarks. It is a bit strange because they have a small flier to read before purchase but you get sent a small booklet once the warranty is bought. I will get my friend to bring in the paperwork just to make sure who is right!
I will check it out tonight and let you know. I appreciate the info as it would be something easy to overlook.
I am still thinking about it and at this point leaning towards not doing it. My buddy who has had several BMW's said in 100k miles, the warranty would not have paid for itself.
But, I am still open for the discussion.

I bought my extended warranty thru a company called Warranty Direct. http://www.warrantydirect.com/ It was less than what the area Bimmer dealers wanted and after closely reviewing the T&Cs of all the agreements I really felt most comfortable with their contract & especially their definition of a part failure. Plus its transferable with the car should I decide to sell it before 100k or I can cancel the warranty at any time and recieve a pro-rated refund.
Failure................... refers to the Failure of a covered part under normal service. A covered part has failed when it can no longer perform the function for which it was designed solely due to its condition, and not due to the action or inaction of any non-covered parts. In addition, a Failure will be deemed to have occurred when a covered part has worn beyond the manufacturer's tolerances allowed for the particular Vehicle at the mileage when the problem occurs.
Hope this helps!

I have bought the extended warranty from the dealer for approx. $3k. I have 2004 model and my original warranty ran out about a year ago since it passed 50k mile mark. However since then my vehicle has had several major components failing on me. I had adaptive xenon failure which required dealer to replace the entire passenger side headlight and also active suspension system fixed under the extended warranty. Had I not purchased the warranty, I believe the repair cost could have been close to $2000 or more. Considering that I have the extended warranty until 2009, buying the extended warranty might just pay for itself in my situation. However, YMMV.

If you can find it, a warranty that covers everything except specifically excluded componets is preferrable. If you rely on "coverage" definitions, you may find that what failed was not actually "covered."

I have about 400 miles before my warranty runs out. I will most likely keep my car for over 100k.
The BMW extended warranty is $3775. Normally I am not a fan of extended warranties (money makers for the dealers). A side from the minor stuff, CIP upgrades and door seals, the only real problem I have run into is a MAP sensor going out.
My concern is some of the costly systems on the car (CIP, Active Steering...)
Opinions?

which dealer did you buy this warranty from? is this the bmw oop warranty? if not, which insurance co underwrites it?
to the board,
i'm not the original owner, so i'm stuck with 3rd party warranties thru dealer or credit union... considering 5y/100k zurich insurance(thru dealer) for $3800 (list price) or 6y/100k interstate warranty (thru credit union) for $3600
problem is latter does not cover nav. neither has mention of active headlamps...
very concerned that at 50,001 i'll be up a creek - sounds like that's the pattern here!!!
any help from the board will help.
my car's a '05 545 sport, all options (except rear shades)... 49,500 miles, so i have to decide in the next week!

Back in March this year I was quoted the Original Owner Protection from BMW (It covers you for a total of 6 years from the date you bought the car new or 100,000 miles) for 2,825. What happen since then? Have prices gone up that badly?
