I did European Delivery in May. As far as I know my car was shipped in the same manner as any other BMW.
I wasn't concerned about it at all. Any damage that happens during European Driving is covered by the insurance that BMW provides. I just got my hood, front bumper, and passenger doors fixed and repainted (minor dings and scratches). Any damage that occurs during transport is also covered and will either be fixed at port if it is safety related or it will be fixed by your dealer.
You can certainly save a little money by doing European Delivery, but that is not the main reason to do it. The experience is fantastic! The delivery at the Welt with your car on a rotating platform under lights is pretty cool. Getting to experience the Nurburgring in my own car was amazing. Getting to hit 150mph on the autobahn, priceless.
I also took redelivery at the Performance Center. If you have an opportunity, that is also a great experience.

We put almost 3000 miles on the car in Europe, so we were well past the break-in period before we really opened her up.

It's hard to find smooth roads around here where most people stay out of your way and you don't have to worry about the cops.
The picture in my sig was the last picture my wife took. It was either right before I hit 150mph or right after I took my foot off the gas and slammed it on the break as this sub-compact rent-a-car pulled in front of me doing no more than 80mph while I was in the left lane of a three lane highway. Can someone say, break check. To say the least, it took my wife and I a while to have the adrenaline levels settle down and our heart rates get back to normal. The rental car companies really should provide more instruction on how to drive safely in Europe.
These cars really feel at home after 110mph and are rock solid all the way up to 150mph.

Some still freak out when they think about speed and say it's reckless to drive that fast, but in a modern car on unrestricted autobahn it simply isn't. It's normal, and the traffic accident rates of Germany stack up favourably against countries like the US and UK.
