I got this from another site, so take with a grain of salt......

BMW has announced base prices for the new 5 series.

525-- $39,300

530-- $44,300

545-- $54,300

The entry 525 is priced 0.6% lower than it's predecessor on an equipment-adjusted basis.

Option package pricing will be released soon.

Talking

This pricing is correct. Just talkwed with my dealer in AZ and he said that the 530 base price is $44,300 + $695 delivery, putting it at $44,995 before options. The options price sheet has not been released (as of this morning). Also, if you want a sports package, you might have to wait until the October production cycle.

Think there will be luxury or guzzler taxes on the 545 in US?

Coops;

Seems like a rip-off to me. That's almost an 8 percent increase in base for the 530. And exactly what is standard on these cars (i.e. 525) now that wasn't before????? All of the new technologies are options: Active Steering, ARS, Adaptive headlights, etc.

What gives?????

I wish the car was less expensive. Since, I buy a car for it's life, I want as good a car as I can afford when I buy. This allows me to justify the extra bucks for a nicer car. I'm looking at mid-size luxury. I have tried the MB E430/CLK430, BMW530/540 (E39), the Infiniti FX45/G35/M30, Volvo S60/C70, Audi A6 2.7T and found the MB to be too calm with no road feel, the Volvos had front-end torque, the Infiniti's were nice but not as nice as Audi and BMW. I thought the BMW had the best road feel, where the Audi had a better interior for the driver. Also, I hear the Audi's are in the shop more often. My plan is to wait for the new E60 problems to shake out and compare it in about 9-12 months with anything new. I hear a new A6 is coming out in 2005. Also, I hear AWD and 535 may be on the E60 in 2005 if I can wait that long.

Anyways, regarding value, I wish the BMW was less expensive, but I understand why it is more than the others listed above based on the ride and feel. Note MB cars are actually more expensive. Some of last years options are now standard (auto wipers for one), and new options are available; this seems like normal car business. My current dilema is getting the 545 with fewer options or the 530 loaded if I bought today.

If anyone has a suggestion for other cars to try I am open. Otherwise, I hope you all find your next dream car at the right price.

<_< coops;

Yeah, for the most part I agree. But I really think that the price wouldn't have increased nearly as much if it wasn't for the declining dollar. When the 3 Series was redesigned, the price increased modestly and the standard features that were added over the previous model more than compensated for it. I guess BMW knows we will probably buy the car anyway.....
