I was at the dealer again this weekend looking at some of the options I didn't order on my car trying to decide if I want them on the 2005 I will order if my car isn't out of the VPC by friday and the dealer mentions he has a 2001 M5 with 17K miles on it. I took a look at it, mint, silver with black interior. Loaded. They want $56K. I think I am just a bit to tall to fit in the E39, that was one of the main things I liked about the E60. But, 400 horsepower would be sweet. Any thoughts?

It's a great car, but the design of the E60 makes everything else look dated, including the E39 (as great looking as it is).

I would love the new M5, but way out of my price range and won't be in the US for another year. I agree it does look dated next to the E60, but it is an M car with 400 horse.

Interesting.. Although I really love the E39 M5 it still is a lot of money for the "old" model..

GET THE 545. (IMO)

The E39 M5 was the best sedan in the world, and may still be. It's really up to you, and you'll need to test drive both until you decide. If it was me, I would get the 545. No question about it - it is almost as quick as the e39, and beats it in virtually every other category. Plus, do you really want to be driving a 6 or seven year old car in a few years?

One thing that I found interesting was the prices for these cars are pretty stable, a year newer is $5K more and a year older is $5K less. I don't know if this will hold true after the E60 M5 comes out.

Killing time waiting for the car, I was looking around at some of the competitors and found the Audi RS6. Pretty interesting car, 450 Horsepower, Quattro. A local dealer has one that has been on the lot since November, it is a 2003, they didn't make any 2004's. It's sticker is $85K, I asked if they would take $60K and he called me back to say the lowest they would go is $72K. I wonder what they will be saying when it's 2005 and they still haven't sold it.

Damn... tough call!!

Been an M5 owner and will probably never sell my M car while I am alive. The car is special. Its an "M" car and 50 years from now, people will always refer it as "the M car" where the 545(E60) or 540 (e39) will be "just another 5 series" years from now.

Yes, I think the E39 M5 is outdated in comparison to the E60. The E60 just have alot of neat stuff that M5 does not, HUD, SMG, graphic PDC, active: steering, head lights and suspesions.

I guess if you intend to keep the car for more than 10 years and able to take care of the car, garage it, etc. The e39 M5 would be the way to go. It is collectible, and its your pass to become the elite BMW owners club. Yes!! They will always be able to build a faster 545/550 but it will never be the "M" car unless it has the V-10 in it Buying an E39 M5 allows you proudly "YES!!!answering strangers flagging you down to asking you "...is that an M5?/!!" Membership has its privilage.

But if this is a car you lease or keep for 5~6 years tops as a everyday driver, no place to park but the street. You should get the 545.

I am greatful that I don't have to decide between the 2

good luck w/ whatever you chose to do.
