My Ride: 2008 Sapphire Black on Black M5 - loaded sans soft close doors
Default

Funny story... sort of...

So I arrive at the dealer to pick up my new 550 yesterday and the sales guy says "oh by the way, we just got an M5 in are you interested in that by chance?". Was a stock M5, Black Sapphire, with black interior (and chrome trim which I love). Car was $12K more than mine (sticker for sticker)

I was almost ready to switch to this beast when they said "oh yea, it has 1,300 miles on it and we are asking $90K for it".

That sealed it - I was back in my 550. Pic is attached - best I could do as they originally had it in a dark corner up against a wall.

Congrats. Let's hope your picture reflects the last "wall job*" you'll get from that dealer.

* Wall job is where they pull it into service and park it along the wall and charge you for doing nothing.

Cheers,

Hey that's great you are finally in a 550. Looks great. Enjoy it.

PS. What's the sticker that looks like a Mr Bill face on the rear?

California dealers are getting $10K over M5 sticker too. Its a supply and demand thing. $90K out the door with tax and license may have been a good deal though...but I'm sure that wasn't what they had in mind either. As for the 550i, you can't go wrong...plenty of usable power and I know you'll be happy. Conrats!

Actually, it's illegal for BMW to force a dealer to sell the car for MSRP, or any other price. BMW, Mercedes and other manufacturers look the other way in the US. On the other hand, Porsche, for example--while they can't legally prevent selling over MSRP--discourages the practice by withholding allocations of hot models to any dealer who tries it, so none do.

BMW dealers here in IL charge sticker for M5s. But many of them are purchased by friends of the dealer and instantly put up for sale on consignment - for $10K more than what they went for new! Nice little loophole. Either way, I did have the chance to order an M5 when a slot opened up suddenly during my order process - but the 550 is plenty of car and plenty of money and I'm really happy with it.

One advantage though of buying slighty used is you may escape the high cost of licensing fees the first year. If in fact it has been previously registered.
