My Ride: BMW X-5, New Black Saphire Metallic 530i "enroute."
How do I get just the "halo's" on without the daytime running lights? Turn to the "parking" light position?

You could choose to have your DRL by simply checking this (arrowed)
Attachment 7935
This option, in the Vehicle Settings menu appeared after I upgraded to CIP16.2, but I cannot be sure it's an option available in your country.

Yes MEX is right, it turns on the headlight and NOT the parking lights!
I would have guessed that this is a country dependent option and I am NOT in the US either

I have CIP 16.2 and I don't have that option. I am in the US. My understanding is that it can only be turned on/off by the dealer. It would be a nice thing to have control over, though.

[/quote]I believe DRLs are mandatory in Canada and BMW imports the same spec cars for all of north america, so they can't give you the option of turning them off yourself.
