A post on another site gave me an idea...

I have access to car auctions because my family owns motorcycle dealerships. All you need to do to join a car auction as a dealer is your motor vehicle dealer license (which we have) and pay the fee. So I was thinking that I could go to a car auction & purchase a used, in-warranty, 2-3 year old 550 that has come off lease. It would still be in warranty so any issues would be resolved by the dealership, right? Also, I think I should be able to get a HUGE discount on the price I would pay versus market. From obsessively reviewing autotrader.com, etc it seems that the prices on the 550 are depressed right now (because of poor gas mileage?) and that you almost pay as much for a 530/535 similarly equipped because of this. If that is true, then that means that dealers won't be bidding on the 550's at auction in mass (my theory anyway) and so I would think I could purchase one for at least $3-$6000 below average market selling price. Does this sound crazy or crazy like a fox?

Might be. All you'd have to do next is decide if the 550 is what you what. Some people have gone with smaller because it does differ when you go to the gas station but if you're wanting all the maximum power closest to an M5, do for it!

I think so. I drove both '08's at the local dealer back to back & liked the 550 better, I think mostly because I just love the sound of a V8. Plus gas is no biggie in my personal situation. I have a company car as a daily driver so this would be our weekend/family trip car (or my I'm awake and bored at 4am so let me go for a spin in my fine-a$$ ride car! :-)

I doubt that sellers would be willing to take a bath on the 550s they are selling, but you should be able to get some good deals considering gas prices and the trend to smaller for efficient cars. I say, take a good stab at it and see what you can pick up a 'bargain'!
