Sorry, I can't help you but I have the same problem in my 05 545i. Very infuriating so I sold the car just today actually. Took a big hit, but i don't want a car that is unpredictable.
It seems to me that it is human nature to adapt to machines and when BMW tried this adaptive technology the machines are messing up trying to adapt to humans.
Why doesn't BMW just stick to first calss engineering and leave the techno wizardry to the Japanese?

Merv,
This definetly isn't solely turbo lag issue because if you manually select 1st gear or put into DS it does not occur. The problem is compounded when the turbo does kick in around 2500 rpm coupled with a kick down at that point so the car immediately red lines then changes up again within a split second.
Damon Hill have agreed to remap the car which will make the problem dissapear for around 1500 miles but it will then 'adapt' itself again.
Incidentally how many miles have you on the 535d as mine started to show the problem around 6000 miles.
Regards
Dave

Well the dealer has agreed 'as a good will gesture' to reprogram the car with CIP 19.2 on Saturday. I believe it is at 18.x folowing the update back in July (new nav icons but the amber LED's are off).
Hopefully this will make a difference. For what it's worth I'm looking to position things with BMW UK and anyone else who will listen as a safety issue rather than just a technical fault.

I bought a new 530d Sport Auto from Damon Hill in June 2005 as the previous 530d Sport I had was fantastic. But this one is just terrible. I have real trouble pulling away, the exhaust periodically sounds like its got a hole in it and screws up the shift patterns, it's returning about 22MPG, downshifts at 80MPH for no apparent reason and I'm really disappointed and looking for a way to hand it back to them. I will be speaking to a solicitor as it sounds like BMW don't have a fix and the problem will just continue.

Well the car was reprogrammed with CIP19.2 on Saturday. So far it has not exhibited the problem since being updated. Interestingly the technical advisor said the CIP19.2 bundle upgrade from the previous version did not have a module for the gearbox. He said he had to force a manual update to the gearbox systems.
After reading an overview document on this site discussing the operation of the adaptive gearbox, I can't see how the problem is fixed for a short period of time by a reprogram as the adaptive component operates almost instantaneously rather than adapting to your driving style over a long period of time. If the previous update is anything to go by it should be around another 1200 miles (4 weeks) before things start going wrong again.
Watch this space ....

Here is the closest thing I could find on a E60 to a BMW recognized problem

The 7 series has a similar complaint but they also get a "clunk" when coming to a stop.

I had mine reprogrammed last week and I had got maybe 500m from the dealer when the exhaust started its 'blowing' sound and the shift patterns went to cock. This is the worst ?40k car ever, my wife refuses to drive it now as it is so unpredictable. I'm pushing BMW Finance to take it back now
Please let us know - I've got 18.1 and things did improve slightly, I think!
