Ok now i'm really angry with this car !
Yesterday went for a little drive near town, and then after a roundabout shifted from 2nd to 3rd pressed the gas to 2.500/3.000 rpms and the Horror movie started...
Car went like crazy the revs went to 5.000 rpms, a lot and i mean a LOT, of white/grey smoke, speed incresing, lots of noise from the engine, and i was in the middle of some cars...
Got to leave the main road to a secondary road and then managed to stop the car braking and keeping the 4th/5th gear...
Engine stopped, smoke from the exhaust, smoke from the front ....
Got the car towed to the dealer .... car is under warranty until 1 st June... i'm waiting for the info about the engine status.
75.000 ?, 530d, 1st June 2004, 96.000 kms and more than 30 days (in 23 months) stopped in the dealer to fix problems....
What the hell is this ....??

That dosen't sound good!! We have 76.000 km on clock right now, and the only issues we have had are, software related, and a new gearbox...
A 3 liter diesel engine should last at least 300.000 km's before major work needs to be done!
Good luck with your car!

I had a blown turbo with my previous car : E46 320d. It was on a German highway and hopefuly, there was an exit at less than a kilometer : driving with a broken turbo can damage the engine.
The engine wasn't hurt but the entire exhaust line had to be changed because oil had spread everywhere. The car run perfectly after repair.
I hope you don't have much damage.

The problem that you have is that there was a leak of oil in one of your turbo's, the oil is taken from the engine to cool the bearings of the turbo, and if there is a leak of oil in the turbo's the engine will run on oil instead of diesel.
Turning off the engine will not help, you have to stop it by placing it into a high gear.
Be happy that you have two turbo's because if you had only on turbo, your engine will rev up to 7000+ and your engine will be blown.Because this happen to only one turbo, only the half of cylinders are running (4 for a 8 cylinder) so your engine was running on half power.
