I've had my '04 545 for about 1.5 years now, and it's been in for service 7 times. I'm about to go in again this week due to continued jerky motion, squeeking brakes, and a turn signal malfunction (the bulb did not burn out, but it won't blink sometimes).

I just added up all the service visits, and it came out to 25 days. That's 4.4% of the time I've owned the car. Is this above or below average?

Here's a list of the days my car has been in BMW service:

Days......Problem
5......Increased Emmissions warning
4......Steering/Suspension warning
3......Steering/Suspension warning, again
1......Oil change
1......Increased Emmissions, again
2......Auto air recirculation failure
9......Jerky motion at low RPMs

Hmm, I don't think it's quite right to include the oil change in your calculation. But still, that's only 1 day, which leaves 24 days in the shop. Seems a bit high to me.
