I would have been happy with standard cruise control.

May I ask why you would have been happy with standard cruise control instead of ACC?

I rarely use the CC, even on the long trips I have taken. I do like it, but feel the money could be better spent elsewhere, not a must have for me, and would not pay Extra for it.

i never want to rely while driving a car on a system, if something goes wrong and you sit in the back row...

I toyed with the idea of going ACC but based on what I discerned as a very good regular CC and the fact that I drive in the NASA 500 every morning and evening going to / from Kennedy Space Center I decided against it. I am more than pleased with the BMW CC. The 5 (well at least rounded to nearest x0 and x5 increments) and 1 mile increments work really well. In the NASA 500 we are typically at 70 mph in two lanes but anticipating that the right gate only can turn right many drivers try for left lane even if going slower. Lots of people jumping in and out of their lanes so I prefer to be in control, i.e. no ACC trying to make the adjustments. I try not to tailgate so I get a few darters (usually with no lane change signal). I do wish, however, I could have tried out an ACC in my actual normal daily commute to see how it would have handled it. But right now I can do a lot without using my gas/brake foot and really get a super comfort position for longer drives.

I did get it, but wish I had spent that on comfort seats or Logic 7 instead. Even if you bring it down to the closest possible following of the car in front of you, it leaves way too much room. People always going around me and cutting in front of me.

I didn't get ACC simply because of the price ?1,350 in the UK. If cost were no object then I would have got it. I find the std CC very good and use it all the time. I believe I have now mastered it enough to drive in quite heavy traffic without using the pedals. If you use a combination of the CC lever with manual mode to slow down it can be done quite easily.

They need to have a "New Jersey" mode to allow for less following distance. This is the exact reason I was not sold on getting ACC on my car. Also, if you have it, you can't use the cruise in "normal" mode -- you are stuck using the active mode.

Maybe my next car -- after they give us back some control -- will have it.

I thought the distance between you and the car in front was adjustable (3 modes)?

It is, but if you read skipper's post, he says that there's still too much room, even on the closest setting...

It leaves the minimum required room by German law!

German's drive much better and with more respect for each other then NJ drivers. I have driven in Germany before, and you do not see people driving in the left lane below the speed limit. You do not see people get onto a highway and merge right over to the left most lane and drive slower then everyone else. As Rudy pointed out you need a NJ mode just because people drive like idiots here. What happens when I use active cruise is that it keeps too big of a distance from the car in front. I have had many people change lanes from behind me and go around me and then pull in front of me, even though I was going the exact same sped as the person in front of me with ACC.
