My Ride: F10 525d SE Imperial Blue, Oyster Leather, Visibility Pack, Business Nav, Sports Automatic, Front seat Heating, Logic7 Loudspeaker System
Default

I currently have a 2002 (i.e.previous model) 525d SE saloon and am looking to change to the E60. So far have tried both the 520d and the 525d.....but can't decide. 520d performance seems better than my current model but 4-cylinder noise definitely greater. I was hoping for a quieter engine with the new 525d.......but although 6-cylinder seemed smoother than the 4- (520d) it was probably noisier than my current car. Obviously performance better than either........but if I go for the 520d then budget will stretch to more options e.g luxury pack & Logic 7. I don't have to worry about company car tax or re-sale values, simply performance, refinement, comfort factors.

Also does anyone have any experience on how the 520d ages. I'm going to do ~ 26,000 miles p.a. for 4 years.

Opinions and experiences please !

Thanks

Cheers doctorwolf, and welcome.

If you cannot afford the 530dA, the 520d is a bargain.
You'll get the E60 car and the small diesel gets you there.

525d is for taxis and police use.

Wait until the 530d enhancements (lighter blocker, piezo injectors) to hit the 525d

Why would anyone need wood? I hate it, especially the high gloss finish. Looks like plastic, doesn't suit the car. To me it belongs in the 1980s. I even decided against Luxury Pack (UK option), much as I wanted it, because wood trim can't be deleted from the Luxury Pack.

520d vs 525d

Doctorwolf,

I am in the process of buying a 520d touring. I just think that all being a 4 cylinder, it is really good value for money. The 525d really brings you only little more in terms of performance, yes refinement is better with a six cylinder, but in my eyes it isn't worth the extra ?3k. The big draw for me is that I can load it up (going to be my wife's car) with extra and it still remains reasonnable, resale value not a big deal for me either, although I believe it probably will hold at least as well than the other 5
All in for me, it is a car fitting very well the purpose I need it for, it is safe, comfortable and the economy seems to be great. If you are really going to do a lot of driving the 530d is outsatnding but that's a lot more money!

The 520d does sound like a great buy. Would have made my choice much more difficult if it had been available.

The 525d just seems quite odd. Not much saving over the 530d, not much better fuel economy. Not much reason to buy it. BMW are obviously trying hard to get people into a 5er. Perhaps as Audi do an A6 2.0 tdi, which I can understand if it's taking sales away from BMW.

the 525d is ?4000 cheaper than a 530d, is that not a reason
