Just got the advanced info on the changes coming with 550i ...
- start/stop button
- engine HP 360
- lumbar std.
- servotronic
- new DSC
- M sport pkg.
- comfort access
- SMG transmission "will not" be offered
This applies to Canada and I don't yet have production start date info. Presumably Sept. or Oct. as expected. Lot's of goodies there. The M sport pak is a welcome addition along with CA. Too bad about the SMG. I was really leaning in that direction. Now it will have to be manual. I suspect, based on rumours, they're moving to a dual-clutch tranny ala Audi's DSG. This makes me think it's coming sooner rather than later. Although, I'm probably getting caught in the interim. Will try and pop down to dealer today to get specifics if there's any additional info.
The new engine in the 5 series should be awesome. Poor man's M5.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
I can't see how they would drop the SMG, its offered in all of their other cars. Its the only transmission initially being offered on the new M5.
The Audi system is smoother because it tries to anticipate the next gear selection but falls on its face if the car selects a gear and you wanted another. Not very sporting. The Audi system also upshifts by itself if you go above certain revs, again not very sporting if you want to hold the gear.
I love the SMG and its one of the things that differentiates BMW from other premium car manufacturers.

My Ride: '05 545i, silver gray, black leather with anthracite maple wood, sport package, premium sound, navigation, cold weather package, electric rear sunshade, folding rear seat, satellite radio prep, PIAA 4150K fogs, red rear reflectors, hardwired Valentine One
SMG also not available on the E90, nor the 7er. DSG on the way, which is probably a good thing. Much smoother gear changes in auto mode, and faster shifts in all modes.
FWIW, the new Porsche 911 Turbo will also have DSG--they use it in their new ALMS car.

M Sport Pack?? Available for the 550??? The whole sha-bang? With suspension, steering wheel and the works? Standard or Optional? Either way WOW... or is that only for Canada?

Just came back from dealer with additional details (at least for Canada).
SMG is out and manual isn't avail until Oct production. If you want to be first on your block with 550 it will have to be Steptronic.

USA has dropped SMG on all its models, but europe is keeping it
This was confirmed in a BMW letter on the E90 forums, because people in the USA wanted to order SMG E90 but BMW USA said it will only be available outside the USA
Also remember the standard wheels for the MSport Pack are 18" the 19" is optional
