I'm going to test drive the brand new M-B 250 CDI A AMG next Monday.

The car has a 2.1 liter twin-turbo diesel engine with 204 hp and 500 Nm of torgue.

Will tell you about it Monday evening (Finnish time) with pics.

I don't know the color of the car, but it should look something like this:

Did test drive today the brand new E-class, a AMG equipped 250 CDI Automatic.

The engine was great, instant response and a lot of torque. The chassis
was also quiet and very comfortable. The whole car felt more solid built than the E60.

But, the handling was OK but not as easy, light and sporty as in a E60.
Also in higher speeds (160 km/h) the car felt not as stable as my car.

The autotrans is a 5-speed only and the shifter is a mess.
It had paddles also but what to do with them in a diesel with 500 Nm of torque but only 200 hp?
After this I adore the electronic shift of the LCI E60.

Also the instrument panel is not nearly as readable as it is in a BMW and the Nav screen is pretty small (see pic 4).

The 18” (245/40 – 265/35 ContiSportContact3) did make a lot of noise but the roads over here
are now very ruff after the winter and cars with spike tires and the temperature was only +5 C.
But the good thing was that no tramlineing and very train like driving up to 140 km/h.

I don’t believe many E60 owners will change into a the new W212 E-class.

(Nokia N73 phone cam pics).

thanks for the right-up ric.

I would expect the engine to perform well, however am surprised to read it only came with a 5-speed auto. Do they offer the 7-speed auto as an option with the 250cdi?
Did you think the engine was a good match for the car? Its possibly a good indication of what a "523d" could be like?

Benz is about comfort and BMW driving pleasure, however I would have though that the AMG pack would have brought the sports feeling close to your non-sport 5er.

Those 18s just look lost on that car. Overall the car looks quite stylish, but just doesn't grab my attention particularly. I thought the AMG pack would be visually more imposing, like the M-Sport pack is on the 5er.

Redline at ~4200 RPM? I guess I don't know much about diesels.

The 7-speed is only for 350 gas and diesel and the 500.
I sat today in a 350 CDI in the shop and it didn't have the lousy gear lever at all,
only a stick on the right hand side of the steering wheel.

The 523d could well have the same feel of power, my 520d don't have it

Actually the 220 CDI would be enough for the car.

Dear CWS530.
The diesels don't rev, they torque.
The redline on my 520d is at 4,600 rpm.

The new diesels are awesome!

I don't follow MB's logic with the auto. The engine is currently the only of its kind in this class, i.e. a 2 litre bi-turbo with economy and performance etc, but they only offer it with a sluggish 5-speed auto. I think a lot of people were seriously interested in THIS model, but then this auto. I can only assume they are concerned with it being too good and taking sales away from the 350CDI

It will be interesting to see what auto gearbox BMW offers with the F10 523d (2 litre bi-turbo diesel); normal auto only, SAT, or even a double clutch auto like the M cars?

I asked the dealer about it, he said they want to make cars that lasts longer.
He did tell a lot of horror stories about the VW/Audi's SMG's, they brake he said.

M-B is also struggling in the recession, I say!

But now the autotrans increases the CO2's with 20 grams (139 - 159). In these days that
rises the cartaxes in Finland, so also all the extras cost more.
The VW/Audi's SMG lowers the COs'!
In the LCI 520d (136 CO2) the 520dA rises the CO2's only to 149.

But as I said, the tranny worked very nice in the 250 CDI, but not the gear shifter

I hope the new F10 auto's will come with the new 7-speed SMG, but that will be an extra.
I want the see and here about the F10 BMW 523dAutomatic, as soon as p.

In my mind one of the most interesting developments in recent years is the Automatic gearbox. I guess a lot of it is driven by the Diesel engine and CO2, like you wrote above. In February I had a brand new 520dA as a loaner and was impressed with how quick and effective the (standard) automatic functioned. It seemed to be even quicker than my previous LCI 525dA. I could live with that auto again, but some shifters/paddles as an option would be nice... and not having to rely only on Rsyed's SAT DIY mod So I'm with you on the details of the F10 523dA -- hurry up BMW!!
