Coming from a Porsche, but looking for more comfort, in first place I was considering the new Jaguar XK, but then I would have had to wait till now (June) to get one delivered and I had second thoughts about buying an all-new aluminium car from a company not having much experience with this technology, with only 300hp at a much higher price, so I at least postponed the Jag until the XKR version appears. Then I briefly considered a CLS 500, but didn?t like the MB interior and the old 306hp engine (which will be replaced in autumn by the new 5.5 380hp engine, but still there is the fact, that my wife stated the CLS to be an "old men`s car", which pretty much closed the MB discussion for me).
So, now I will stick happily with my E60 for a couple of years, then maybe I will take a look at a then hopefully better designed 6-series (I like the front and interior of the current model, but just can?t stand the ugly rear).
Jaguar have been specialist with aluminium cars for a very long time. Not road going, but alot of their race cars and prototypes were hand crafted from aluminum.

@525dse

Of course You?re right about the Jag racing cars, but I think there?s a difference between hand-crafted prototypes and a mass-production car. Probably Audi has the most experience with aluminium in mass production. BTW, before the Porsche I owned a 1998 Jaguar XK and liked the car very much - no trouble with it at all in 3.5 years and 40.000 kms. But still I have second thoughts about the quality of the new XK.

Moving from my e90 330i, i looked at:

S4 - fast and fun but weird steering feel and i thought it looked too much like a regular a4.
CLS500 - new one was coming out(550) and it was too large. I love the way it looks tho but felt too "boaty".
Cayenne turbo(used) - Can't remember exactly why I did not pick this car. Pretty cool tho.
m3 - needed 4 doors
Imprezza STi - I really wanted this but I was looking to spend 60k for a car and this car was a little too "raw".
A6 - Fugly and stupid imo.

550i - I was expecting a lot less from it because it looked so large. I was blown away by the speed and how well it handled.

I considered, instead of one more expensive e60 5er, having a cheaper 5 series (older e39) and a gsxr1000 k6

Same here - was considering an A6 3.0 TDI Quattro but was ignored by the dealer whereas the BMW dealer really tried hard. Also considered an A6 back in 1999 but the salesman couldn't care less so I ended up in a Saab 9-5.

The Quattro would be a real asset in the Polish winter but seeing how the DSC behaves in the dry I'm actually looking forward to the snow :-).

My Ride: E61 535d Apr 05. UK spec + Media Pack, Luxury Pack & Visibility Pack
Default

Volvo V70 (barge-like)
E91 330d (too small and actually too expensive in relative terms!)

and - for variety and to see what the extra 25k actually buy:

VW Passat Estate (nice car, but engine does not pull enough for the weight)
Honda Accord Aerodeck (wife hated it - did not even want to go for a test drive)
Ford Mondeo Station ( I did not want the test drive, but it's a lot less money for the same space, so we had to see it)

E61 535d won hands down

Didn't really consider E class or A6, as the original idea of even looking at others was to try to save some money. It failed dismally.
