Faster than an M5? Only on the days when the GTI is not broken. The rest of the time it will be in the shop, draining its owner's bank account. I am a former VW owner, so I know about these things :-) My Passat was great fun to drive, but only on the days when it worked. I wish there were more of those days.

There was a time in the past when VW owners were as enthusiastic as BMW owners are today. VW must improve product quality, otherwise they might as well fold up the tent and go home.

 

You're exactly right. I had a '97 GTI VR6. I loved that car. Great fun to drive when it worked. When I was negotiating the purchase I somehow managed to finagle the VW 100,000 mile zero-deductible extended warranty for $329. That extended warranty paid out $18,561 (I kept a file) before I traded the car with 99,618 miles on it. The car only cost me around $23k, so that was quite a payout. Fun car though.
