I really do not understand why are we waisting so much time arguing how bad is BMW compared to MB on a BMW forum. Something here is going definitely wrong.
For sure such discussion would be much more appropriated on mbworld.org than here.
I agree on this. It's wrong to start such a debate in the first place.

Anyway but since we're talking about reliability, 700 just check the difference. BMW has had some issues with the SMGIII, true but i also met alot of people that didn't have any kind of issues. Rule of thumb is: Proper brake-in for 3000km to 5000km. In the first 3000 IS A MUST to behave. And after that carefull with too many LCs. That's pretty much it. The 1st flaws were just normal because the technology was new and it's acceptable for every model to have gimmicks in the 1st year or even two years (we are talking aobut an M here).

Bmw really didn't want to have all those problems, it seems some are inevitable when developing such a state of the art transmission that shifts way faster than any slush box from Mercedes. In comparison MB knew from the start how the new engine will stack up against the older supercharged version and yet they let it out, even overestimating it. In contrast to the engine's output bmw is doing vice versa it seems. Many people said that the V10 engine is under rated and in turn it's output is around 515-520bhp.

just for the record, the AMG performance studio (for a princely sum of 2100euro) offers
a bespoke modification to the 55s transmission with two modes (M1/M2). After the modification,
the quicker mode shifts gears in 60ms

As for reliability, out of the 5 M5 owners i personally know, 2 have had replacement gearboxes, and 1
has already had a replacement engine at 13000km... On another side, one has survived almost 60000km
with the same internals

So it seems it counts alot how the car is borken-in and then treated, the year model and some luck. All those things together.

Are you serious? Man and it drinks oil like more than normal (for an m5)? How many km on the odo? And seriously now, no mechanical problems?

around 64000now... He lives in sofia and works in varna, so he does around 1500km every week, which might explain why
its soooo reliable. His first service was at 2100km, his second one at 13000km (i got to drive it after that ) ... after that i dont know the service history 100% but i do know he has had no mechanical failures so far

Question averything you hear, especially from speficic countries.

Turns out when you check the VIN all those vehicles were formerly registered somewhere else.

I love the internet.
