The Bimmer is for drivers.
I went through the same decision process you're going through over several recent weeks, comparing E500, S500, CL500 and 545. Bought a 545 earlier this week and, for me, it wasn't a tough call. Now, if I can stop half the cars salesmen in Washington, DC, calling me...!

Same here, test drove the S55, S500 and 545 amd there was no comparisons. I just received my 545 SMG and I cant wait for morning to get in the car...
The S55 was fast, but it was like driving your living room sitting in a lazboy down the highway. No road feel whatsoever.
I never liked the styling on the E500 so it wasnt even a consideration. I did like the CLK55 AMG, but it did not feel as good as the 545 and it is only 2 doors...
If you want a sports car, get a 545. If you want a german caddy, get a MB. Easy as that...

THANKS A MILLION GUYS!!!!...the reason i compared the 5 with the S and not the E is because i preferred the S...S is the most prestige in MB while the 7 is way too luxurious for me...
just to make sure guys...is the new S really going to be out soon?..if it is...then i've already made my decision...

I think it looks extremely boring and reminds me of the Audi A6.
BMW 545i SMG - You can't go wrong!

Welcome Aboard, hoow
Both of these cars are nice, in fact I've owned both of these cars (S600, S55 and 545i).
However in choosing the car it all depends on, are you a driven kind of guy or a passenger kind of guy thing. In my case, I've prefer to use S class as my daily car due to more legroom in the passenger seat since I've a chaufer to drive me around to the office. However, when I choose to drive myself, I much prefer to drive a 5 series due to the size and more fun factors than the S.
However, IMHO, if you could increase your budget a little bit, I highly recommend you to purchase the Masserati Quattroporte, I've purchased one, It's have fun factors offer of the 5 Series and extra space of the S. Good luck in choosing your car, whatever you choose, both of these cars are great.
