I think the S class is usually compared to the 7 Series, not the 5 series. I do not know that comparing a 5er to the S is fair comparison. The S will be significanlty bigger and will drive like a bigger car. The E60 will be much more agile. This of course, ignores the fact that most people think BMW 's handle better thena the comparable MB.

Tha being said, I think the S class is a tremendous car. MB does a gret job making a very large care look smaller and sleeker. The 7 series, by comparison, IMO, looks much larger, though I do not think there is more interior room.

If you really are comparing the S class to teh E 60 the choice should be easy. Do you want size and luxury, or greater performance.

Just my opinion . . .

Welcome to E60.

Good question. A point to note is that the S-class is about to be redesigned, so if you buy now you'll be driving an older model S-Class by the end of next year. Have a look at the 545i. You will not be dissapointed!

See here for article

Good luck

I would choose for e60 its looks very sportive and my gf thinks that a merc is a old mans car so i wouldnt drive in a merc before my 60's birthday and than i dont even want a merc i will always drive a bmw (if i cant afford it) <_<

The S is a more luxurious larger and better appointed sedan. But thats about it. You are on the wrong forum if you want to be swayed to a Mercedez.

I echo BMW525Dae completely. Can't even think of Merc or any other car than BMW.

I like S class very much, but it looks wayyy too mature to me. It's very classy and luxurious, but not as agile as 545i.
To make life easier, if you like pull back feeling, and hard cornering, get 545i. If you like more luxurious soft ride, quite cabin, get the S. Assuming that money is not a factor here.

As noted by several replies, they are two completely different cars. The S-Class is a high end, luxury prestige car with a focus on the "prestige" part (at least here in the US), while the E60 is a mid-level, luxury performance sedan (the so-called executive express). If you want "prestige" in the BMW, a more appropriate comparison would be for the 7 series.

The currently available non-AMG S-class comes with a V8 (4.3l or 5.0l) or a 5.5l V12, so the only comparable e60 is the 545i. Having driven all V8 cars, the 4.3l S430 is underpowered for the very large heavy car (4160lbs) it has to move, so the only comparable real choice is the S500, which has the same 5.0l V8 as the E500 and the 545i blows this one away. There is no V12 e60, although the V10 M5 will blow away the S600 (the only comparable Mercedes to the M5 is the S65 AMG).

The bottom line is that the S430 costs US$76K, the S500 costs US$84K and a fully loaded 545i will be about US$10K less than the S430. The new S Class is supposed to have upgraded engines and an iDrive imitator, but it is not likely to weigh less than the current one (which weighs about 400 lbs more than the e60). Note that the extra weight is due to all of the creature comfort luxuries in the S Class that are not in the e60.

I agree with the above, compare an S to a 7 series or a 5 to an E series. Personally I think the choice comes down to luxury (Merc) vs performance/handling (BMW).

welcome aboard, hoow ! i agree with all the posts above. s-class is a luxury and e60 is a sport-luxury. it makes quite a different. only s-class considers sport-luxury is s55 and soon to be s65. but the base price for that is $112,620, about double of a 545 or triple a 525 . it all comes down to what are you looking for. if you are looking for performance and luxury, 545 is "bang for the buck" compare to s55. also, bmw provides four years warranty and four years free maintenance if you live in the states while m.benz waived the four years free maintenance from all '05 models. you do the math .
