Mercedes is a luxury car.? BMW is a drivers car, with some luxury.? Everybody needs to decide--do you want more luxury or more driving fun??
In the US on an E class, voice command is not standard (and I believe the only voice command available is for the optional telephone), nor can you have DVD playing capability, and the base MSRP for an E500 is around $2,500 higher than a 545i, so you're paying for something extra...
I bought a '03 E55 when they first came out, thinking it would be a great sport sedan (unfortunately, it was not possible to take an extended test drive).? Even with the AMG tuned suspension, it was not a fun car to drive.? Incredible power
? (actually too much power for the car to handle), but numb steering, horrible braking, and a sloppy suspension.?
? And that was an AMG--I can't imagine what an E500 would be like.
My 545i is so much more fun to drive than the E55.? Sure--not as much power, but the additional power in the E55 was pretty much wasted.
Everything is a trade off.? Porsche drivers complain about the lack of standard features, and the lack of optional features (like Bluetooth).? I see BMW as being somewhere between Porsche and Mercedes on the driving/luxury scale.

I agree with Stream that the power on the E55 is wasted. I was torn between the 545i and the E500...I ended up with the 545i. The margins are definately larger on the BMWs, leaving more room to negotiate a better price (and I did!). Even the E500 had sufficent power for what the car could handle, but the drive was no comparison (even the Mercedes salesman agree that the BMW drives better!) Comparing the E500 to the 545i...price would not be the issue, but the Mercedes would be slightly more expensive.

i am concerned with taking corners in a perfect line rock solid, i pass when i feel like passing, i still pass when i don't feel like passing.
hearing the engine roar and stopping on a dime. gunning the car chasing curves and accelerating uphill.
no, i don't need any other music or more wood panels or a more extensive leather surface, i already came....

Guys,
if I am looking towards BMW it becomes a very expensive car:
- extra paying for the voice control
- extra paying for MP3
- extra paying for DVD playing in the front
- extra paying for the individual rear entertainment (without having it already-just the price for individual)
- extra paying for mp3 aux
THIS IS ALL FOR FREE WHEN YOU BUY A MERCEDES.
You can better buy an S-classe

If I want to be entertained with tunes or a movie... I'll do it at home with my HD wide screen and/or 5.1 surround sound.
