I don't get it. Those things will never see off-road conditions so who needs 4WD and all that bulk?

That is the $1M rhetorical question about most high performance SUVs out there right now, not just for modified ones like these. The Cayenne and Touareg are capable of heavy duty off roading but I agree, I don't think any of them ever see mud. Not sure about Porsche but that's one reason VW has now separated some of those key off-road features on the Touareg as options.

Personally though, I would still love to have a high performance SUV that I can take to the snow (light to medium "soft" road duties), camping, and long treks and still have the option to haul a$$.

Valid point. However, whether a buyer will use a given feature/capability or not does not solely or necessarily determine that a feature/capability will be included by the manufacturer or added by the owner. There are many reasons why manufacturers and owners add features/capabilities to cars other than because they need to use them.

I have never taken my car up to 160 mph and don't need to. I seldom even "floor" my car. I doubt most of the estimated 225,000 owners of e60s "floor" their cars or take them up to 160 mph or actually need 300 - 500++ HP.
