Is Nissan lying about GT-R horsepower?
Pretty much.

Back in the late sixties, automakers sometimes purposely under-reported the true horsepower that their solid-lifter, over-cammed and over-carburetor'd monster V8 engines actually delivered. More recently, some manufacturers have overestimated the real power of their vehicles, which has led some to distrust factory horsepower numbers. Owners of the uber-impressive Nissan GT-R have been wondering if they've been lied to regarding real horsepower figures too. But in this case they may actually be getting more than the 480 horses that they had bargained for. In fact, after considering that the coupe is capable of hitting 123 miles per hour in the quarter mile and the fact that it weighs roughly four-thousand pounds, the New York Times Wheels blog estimates that the GT-R really makes 550-580 horsepower at the crank.

While we are certain that the rabid horsepower wars and the debate over the GT-R's true power as compared to its rivals will rage on, NYT's estimates are actually pretty much in line with what Motor Trend got after putting the Nissan supercar on the dyno, and that's a figure that really can't be argued with. Thanks for the tip, Pete!

I heard the same in regards to the GT-R. I heard the numbers Nissan announced were very under rated. Any idea what the real numbers are?

They are lying somewhere. The laws of physics tell me something that has less hp and weighs more is not faster than a 997TT. So either the times they state are bogus, the car has way more HP than they are claiming, or they have some "hot" cars that they are using for all the testing and number publishing that won't be the same ones that arrive at the dealers.

YES THERE LIEING....the bhp for the GTR is not 480 as they say... its 528 in hp... the real numbers are 528 over 498.. thats the real number.... .... maybe from motor to the wheels the power is 480 or 490... but its no way 480 as they list......

When the nurburgring times first came out, the most logical explanation was that the GT-R was severely underrated. Now fast-forward a couple months and there are varying reports on HP. There have been some dyno runs with the GT-R registering very high horsepower numbers, but there is currently a GT-R making the rounds with the U.S. mags and producing very average acceleration numbers. Acceleration numbers which are very much inline with the GT-Rs listed HP and weight.

However, even with average 1/4 mile and trap speeds, this particular GT-R is still producing faster lap times than 997TTs and Z06s in comparison tests.

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with underrating HP. If BMW had underrated the 545 like they did with the 335i, I would have no problems with that.

That is because the GT-R isn't faster than the 911 Turbo.

Car & Driver tested the M3 vs. 911 Tubo vs. GT-R

The cars were tested in the same conditions, same track, same driver, same day. The 911 turbo had the fastest 0-30, 0-60, 0-140 and the fastest 1/4 mile. It also had the best 70-0 braking and skidpad numbers. Also surprising the 911 turbo had the best gas mileage.

And the best thing is the 911 just got refreshed, and the turbo is next.

My buddy's bro just got a 07 911 turbo. I've never felt power like that thing in my life. It was scary fast.. it's basically a street legal race car. Very comfy too surprisingly!
