We had an X5 and needed more room and ended up getting a 2006 R350. It really is a nice vehicle - I had a problem the first month I owned it and it took them 10 days to fix it so I was questioning of my decision to buy a merc but ever since then it has 14000 trouble free miles and wife loves it. It has lots of room and we bought a Saks 5th edition for a price we could not refuse so it is very well loaded. Any car can have problems and Merc is having their own fare share of them. I just got my 2008 535xi back from the shop after being there for 4 days - steering pump failure at 6600 miles.

I have a few friends who own Mercedes and have not heard of any complaints. One of our senior members here, Vegastrashed recently switched from his 545 to an E63 AMG. Maybe he can chime in on his experience.
Might be luck of the draw for some.

I have lost count how many times my E60 has been for problems, the latest was a full automactic tranny replacement. My last car was a Benz C320, not one problem, just a dead battery once.

Or maybe an AMC Gremlin?

You've got to have pictures to back up the statement. I still say the denim interior will make a comeback.

Exactly its luck of the draw.

I agree. My dad, for as long as I can remember, has always had a MB. Sometimes putting 200K miles on the cars before getting rid of them, and relatively trouble free. Lets be honest, any BMW or MB is a quality machine - that is how they can justify charging premium prices for their product. With some particular cars, people just have bad luck. But if it happened over and over again you wouldn't see so many of them on the road.
I prefer the styling and sportiness of the BMW over the MB. Most (but not all) MB's seem like they should be driven by old men - more of a luxury auto (realizing that there are some bad@#$ MB's out there). I will be turning 40 this year and not willing to admit that I will soon be in the "class" of what I have always considered the MB owner.
