That's the problem -- the gaz guzzler tax goes to the gov't, so it does NOT subsidize the sales of more efficient vehicles. The only way to do that is to pay the auto manufacturer directly to subsidize its development costs -- last time I checked, no one wants to write an extra check to BMW for $$ for more energy efficient, less poluting but higher performance vehicles. Heck, most people want to negotiate down the purchase price of the car!

In short, the hp war will last as long as the market will subsidize it. Once the cost of ownership (gasoline, purchase/lease cost, insurance, registration & taxes) of the high hp vehicles gets too high, then unit sales will drop and the manufacturers will invest their R&D $$ elsewhere they can make a profit.

 

Well thats also cuz back then when a average car had about 95hp... now a stupid accord has 240!
