My Ride: 2007 Mercedes Benz e63 AMG
Default

I'm in DC for spring break at the in-laws and had some extra time yesterday, so I stopped by the local MB dealer in Arlington (American Service Center - what a stragne name). They were actually open on a sunday...even more odd! Anyhow, they had more pre-owned MB cars than I have ever seen...

I was talking to the sales guy about their AMG cars and he mentioned that they had a CPO e63 on the lot - a 2007 car with 9k miles. $104k sticker on sale for $62,995. (Talk about depreciation!) We walked over, chatted about it, and he suggested I take it for a spin. Who am I to refuse such kindness? The BEST part was that he gave me the keys, told me to be careful, and walked away - WOWOWOWOW.

I havent driven the M5 yet, but this car is faster than an M5 per Car and Driver (runs a 4.1 in the 0-60). Let me tell you, for a 4-door sedan car, its the fastest car I have ever driven, and I have driven a 911 turbo, a number of Vettes and a Ferrari 355 Spyder. For a sedan, this car is simply unreal. I'm sure our pal VegasTrashed knows what I'm talking about!

A silky smooth 7 speed transmission that shifts faster than my manual, along with true paddle shifters than do not automatically upshift (like most steptronics). I tore across I-495 and spent 30 minutes listening to this amazing engine - it was ferocious. Tight steering, and an amazing combination of sport, with enough luxury to feel much more special than my BMW. Mercedes really outdoes the BMW's interiors for the luxurious feel, and the whole time the engine is growling like a Lambo. It was exhilarating.

Car and Driver compared the M5, the e63 and the Audi S6 and declared the MB e63 the winner...and I can see why. An incredible car, truly incredible. Might be the replacement for my e60 when the lease runs later this year...

I might have to drop by the local MB for a test drive, just for kicks! There's an SL63 AMG down there as well...

Good catch, eagle eye. Seriously, though, I don't see it happening, but I do like to rod the hell out of someone else's car once in a while...I mean, see what the competition is developing.

Guess if your not on a Track the Handling is not a factor? I thought that was MB weak point? How but the seats do they have it up to the Bimmer? Do they have DSC or Lane departure? Suppose Fuel savings isn't a factor now right? Hope our kids will get to enjoy this kind of stuff in 2030. Who knows if it is going to be petrol power? Just wondering?

The e63 is faster on the straight but it has nothing on the track. It doesnt even have a real LSD. I really like the car but it seems to me that it would feel incomplete without a real LSD and a non automatic gear box. But who knows i never drove one or sat in one yet. I have been in an e60 m5 and I loved it.

I would take neither cars on a track. Yes the M5 would be better, but both cars are heavy boats. You need something light and can toss around. That is half the fun of running at road courses.
