cough cough bullshit cough cough
EPA's response....

"EPA has not tested a Chevy Volt and therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by GM. EPA does applaud GM's commitment to designing and building the car of the future - an American-made car that will save families money, significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create good-paying American jobs. We're proud to see American companies and American workers leading the world in the clean energy innovations that will shape the 21st century economy."

GM probably jumped the gun here, but in fairness it's not too hard for a manufacturer to predict what any given model's EPA rating will be. When the EPA conducts their tests, the car isn't even on public roads - it's all done on a rolling road using predetermined throttle and braking to simulate a specific predetermined journey. It's pretty likely GM has done much the same test following the standard parameters. The error here is that GM probably mis-described their own test outcome as the EPA number rather than an estimated EPA number. Either way, time will tell what the real number is or should be but it is looking like the results will be pretty impressive. Even GM wouldn't be crazy enough to put a number like that out in to the marketplace if it were entirely bogus.

3c per mile, where do they get that no.? every power co. charges different rates. pge has a baseline and im constantly way over it paying damn near 50 per kwh, this car would make it worse.

The result is by cheating, or at least taking advantage of the testing procedure. The test isn't long enough to drain the batteries. It mostly runs on the electric motor for the test. It must be small and light enough to not need much gas for accel. Run it more than 30 miles and it switches to gasoline at a mere 35 mpg.

Not quite right, Richard... The Volt is all electric. Propulsion come exclusively from the electric motors and the on-board gas engine serves only to recharge the batteries. It doesn't use the gas engine for anything other than topping up the electricity reserves, hence the very high predicted MPG.

Regardless it's 230 MPG or less. GM is going to the right direction. We need big companies to improve technology for cleaner and greener cars.
Maybe it's not going to be a fun car to drive, but it will be one day. This is a friendly competition between major car companies.

Go Chevrolet Volt!! Although I probably won't buy one, but I hope you will have a big success, and save some American jobs.

+1. I also hope the Volt is a winner. Now let's see if it actually sells.
