What do you guys think? I really like how the Z4M coupe looks, and the prices have fallen through the basement, but then I just found several Lotus Elises (2005) for low $30s, and it would always be great to have a 911. What say you?

I'm admitedly biased, but take a look at the 911. That said, any of the three cars that you're looking at will make you very happy. Let us know what you think after you take a test drive.

IMO, the best would be a 1996-1998 Porsche 993 Cabriolet - perfect weekend car and a timeless classic. You can pick up a nice one just under $40K.

All three cars are great, if you enjoy some track days, the Lotus is the ticket.

Go for the lotus. The 99-2001 911 is outdated looking and the Z4m is feminine in my opinion

I like where your head's at, my brother.

Other sporty, weekend-type models to consider (from 2003-2004) in the $30-$40k range:

BMW M3
BMW 645i
Corvette Z06
Jaguar XKR
Porsche Cayman S
MB SL 500

Me? I'd get a Porsche 911.

I am very biased as a 911 owner, but this is exactly what I would get. A 911. Iconic, fun, and easy to maintain(relatively speaking for a quasi super car).

+1 and you can find several 996 models in the $35 - $40K range. I've got an 02 Targa with 30K miles. $90K new, $35 - $40 now.

That's an easy one...buy as late model 993 (94-98 911) as you can get for your money. You won't regret it!

One other thing - the 993 got a small power boost in 2006, moving to 282bhp from 270bhp and supposedly has much better flexibility than the 2005 model.
