The M3 is the bench mark thats why its always compared. IMO the 335i is the direct competitor for the S5 not the M3. The M series is the "creme" of BMW. The CSL will get the last laugh but thats ULTRA hardcore where the audi is not.

Some interesting info:
Today on Germancarblog, it says that the next generation Audi S5 will get the new
3.0 TFSI engine (from the S4). No more 4.2L V8 which will be left for the RS5.
