I have noticed that there are more than 15 used Maserati coupes for sale w/less than 30k miles for less than $30k. That is insane. These cars were in the 70s or 80s new, and some are verts that were in the 90s.
Is there some story here (like massive engine failure or $5,000 tune ups every 30,000 miles)?
I once spent 20 minutes driving a 2002 Maserati vert, and it was an absolute blast. The engine sound is phenomenal.
thoughts? they are almost getting too cheap to resist.

Masers have traditionally had poor resale values. It's hard to shake off a long history of very bad cars. Combine that with the fact that used luxury car prices have fallen through the floor and I'm not surprised about the prices that you're seeing.
The only bad thing that I know about these cars is that the first generation auto-manual was horrible. You're better off with the traditional stick. Other than that, I think that the recent Masers have had a pretty good quality history, so if you like them, you should take advantage of the prices.
One other thing. My guess is that you can find 02 - 03 911s in the mid-$30K range. It's a much better car and a much, much better drive.

Crist Almighty!
Also, another reason why a 2003 version is low on price is that people want the Ferrari engine that came a couple of years later; search for a 4200 GT instead or even a Gran Sport - a much improved car compared to the 2003-version.

As an update, I decided to call the local Maser dealer and talk to a service advisor there. I also spent some time over on maseratilife.com, a web forum for owners. Here's the deal:
According to dealer:
Every two years there is a "standard" service (adjustments, inspections, certain filters, etc.) that costs $2500.
Oil changes are $500 and done every 5k miles.
Every 5 years, there is an additional scheduled service that is about $3250.
On Maserlife, they said these cars consume clutches anywhere from 15k miles to 30k miles, regardless of whether it is the "auto" (SMG style) or manual. Either way, you have to completely replace and rebuild the clutch every two to three years at a cost of $5,000 to $7500.
So, basically, it's a great car to park in your garage and not put any miles on. 15k miles a year would equal $1500 in oil changes. That's insane.
