But if the driver of the petrol car was in the right gear and rev range it would win. The advantage of diesel is that the acceleration is easier to access for most drivers for most day-to-day situations...

As long as we're talking about the new 255hp 3.2 A6, why not compare apples to apples? The 255hp N52 530i would smoke it - the 530i is actually lighter than the -A4- with that engine. There wouldn't even be a question against an A6.

However, it's because of this car that I am expecting VERY good things for the upcoming e90 M3. BMW has less than 2 years to tune that V8 derived from the M5's V10 and being that they already know the specs on Audi's offering, you can bet the M3 will be amazing.
