Not so fast. One is stock and one isn't. If the CTS-V were also modded, and that's pretty easy with any forced induction, it would be quicker still. As is stands, this car, straight off the lot, is shaping up to be nearly as fast as a Porsche 911 Turbo. That's no small achievement for GM. BMW doesn't make anything that (stock) can keep up with the 997 Turbo, highly suspect M5board videos notwithstanding, and the CTS-V is actually looking like a very impressive piece of kit.
I may have misunderstood the original posting . . . that the new CTS-V will have the supercharged engined of the new ZR-1. If that is correct and the anticipated 1/4 mile trap is 118 mph for the CTS-V, then it would be much less than a NOS V10 M5 1/4 trapped of 126 mph (under 12 sec) from dragtimes.com. Without the SC, GM would not pump out 600+ hp.

GM"s SC vs. a NOS V10 BMW, it's BMW all the way.

You also have to keep in mind your comparing it to most likely conservative factory numbers. It is also a detuned version of the ZR-1 motor, that produces 620 hp. So some simple mods should be able to unleash those extra ponies on the CTS-V.

It was one of their goals to make the worlds fastest production sedan.

I guess we have to wait until the magazines/testers get their hands on the new CTS-V.

I'm disappointed that they have to "detune" the engine. For what? So they can retune and repackage it when an enhanced V10 (BMW) comes out?

Kind of pointless though as it's still not apples to apples. The CTS-V engine is stock, albeit detuned from the stock ZR-1 unit upon which it is based (which as it happens turns out an 11.3 quarter mile with a trap of 131mph in its application in the ZR-1). To level the playing field you'd have to bring mods into both sides of the equation and with a little tweaking the CTS-V unit should be easily capable of ZR-1 type numbers at reasonably low cost. As it stands the CTS-V and ZR-1 churn out 556 and 638 bhp respectively right out of the factory door, no mods required.

You can also make the argument that BMW needs two extra cylinders and possibly in the future twin turbos to compete. That is the rumor these days that the next M5 will have a twin-turbo V10.

Fact is both cars are amazing and I give credit where it is due.

Swajames is right, you can't compare stock vs modded cars. And I was kidding with my comment about walking a stock CTS-V. Also to be clear, I do not have NOS although I've entertained the idea. I'd do it in a heart beat if I can find a way to hide the NOS bottle from my wife. LOL!

On that note though, there's a guy on m5board that has a car with pretty much the same mods as me but he also has NOS. I believe his car registered a "modest" 580rwhp on a Dyno Dynamics which is a very conservative machine. Supposedly he has out ran Porsche TTs and Z06s. Of course, that's not a fair comparison either. Just a fun thing to think about and day dream with once in a while.

NOS on a M5 is crazy. I couldn't imagine.

I saw this on another forum. This is what NOS and large amounts of boost does to a Supra. Crazy video.

A few years ago I bought my wife a used Jag S type. When I was shopping for the car for her I test drove a new CTS-V. I was very impressed. A very cool car. However, the interior still had that "made in detroit" feel of an American car.

It would be fun to test one of these!
