If you want luxury buy a Mercedes, reliabity a Lexus, performance BMW. Audi seems to be a compromise on all of the above. I love my 545 especially because of the sports package and the run flats! It sticks like f-ing glue to the road.

Audi is B O R I N G

Sit in a new e60 and a new A6. I mean really....you dont even need to drive the E60 to love it. Only Audi I really like is new A8 but who the hell would buy that thing over a 745i?

Buy E60

I disagree with Luxury = Mercedes

Chrysler = mercedes

Luxury, reliability, sexiness, overall value = lexus

BMW = BMW

I love Lexus and BMW, everything else is just uncivilized

If money is not a problem I would go for the BMW. A few months back i tryed the 525i, and compared it to my neighbours 2.4 l Audi and no doubt the Audi is very nice but the 525i is the car if your a person who loves to drive. I talked to the dealer about this thing about Audi vs. BMW after the testdrive and he said "Audi and Mercedes are the good boys in the class, BMW is the bad boy!!!" And I really think that he is right about that... If yuu want the special and argressive car, the BMW is the one for you...

I also test drove the 4.2 A6 befor ordering my 545i - just to see the level of this car.

I walked away with the following thoughts:

1. Roomy and nice interior.
2. Soundproofing not BMW standard.
3. Driving dynamics not what I'm used to after driving 8 years in a BMW. Just average.
4. Engine, well, it's no award winner - put it that way. Gearbox: felt cheap and unconnected.

My conclusion: No fun. - Wasn't surprised.

Up until last year, I drove VW/Audi's for 20 years. Starting with a VW Scirocco, then an Audi Coupe GT, an A4, and finally an A6 2.7T Quattro. The Audi's were some of the greatest and most fun car's I've ever driven. Why did I buy a 545 last year then? Especially since I live here in the midwest where it does snow in the winter.

The reason to buy a BMW is simple. On the days it's not snowing, there is no sedan made that drives like a BMW. Period. Driving everything else, I'm aware that I'm driving something that's not quite as good. Audi's are fantastic cars, they just don't handle like a BMW. Their main problem is the quattro design requires the engine to hang out over the front axle, giving you a 60/40 weight distribution and a nose heavy car.

Now, if reliability is your major concern, get a Japanese car. If you love to drive, you will never regret getting the Bimmer.

PS - My car has been absolutely faultless. No problems whatsoever in the first 9 months/12,000 miles.

Putting this question on this site is probably the brightest thing you have ever done. Had you not, you would have ended up in a nice ride. Two women at work just purchased the A6. Both are not quite 40, and enjoy the car very much.

I currently drive a 330CIC while I am waiting for my 2005 545I. If you think your wifes car is fun, get up right now and drive the V8 E60. You will buy it on the spot. Unbelieveable. Makes the Audi seem like riding a tricycle downhill. Go!!!!!!!!!!! Go right now. Stop reading, GO!!!!!!!!!!!! You will never look back.
