WM,
Exactly! That's what so damn confusing. As far as I know, no other BT interface does that except the BMW's. So far, I've been in 5 vehicles with BT or aftermarket BT and the Verizon NAV, or should we say, speaker phone option, works fine. Damn frustrating.

I have an LS430 that I am turning in today (picking up my '07 550i) with a Motorol V710 phone. When paired with the car's Bluetooth, the phone speaker doesn't work nor does the phone voice command. When paired with the car, the car systems (speaker and voice commands) become primary and the phone systems don't work (at least with my phone). Lexus and Motorola said this is normal. I couldn't download the phonebook with my phone and had to buy an old Sony Ericson phone, load the phone book and transfer to the car. I then used my V710. Things can always be worse.
There was a revised firmware issued on that phone, you can do it yourself or take into a store.
