OK sports fans here is the lowdown... spoke to a tech at the dealership. He said VC should be working, but many cars had come from the manufacturer with the VC software disabled/not installed. These are cars without Nav but with Bluetooth and with the VC button on the steering wheel. He's not 100% sure it can be fixed without checking the VIN first, but is confident. So next time my car hits the service bay I'll try to get this done.

I think the key here is the VO (vehicle order) software. Cars shipped from the factory w/o BT (ie an incompatible TCU) seem to need an additional change in software (beyond just a CIP change) called VO, which is VIN specific. Once you have that, your BT works completely - I think that may be what you're missing to get voice control.

By Bluetooth enabled do you mean actively working - i.e. a phone is paired and turned on, or just installed? I have Bluetooth installed but no phone working with it. Pressing the VC button on my steering wheel has absolutely no effect on anything the car does.

Yes, bluethooth installed, phone paired, in order to get the VC to work. Otherwise, you're right, the button does not function. If I switch off my bluetooth connection from my phone, the VC button dies.

Again, I think this is only for non-nav cars.

Sigh. I suck.

As a coworker with a Treo 650 kindly pointed out today when I asked him to try to pair his phone with my new 16.2 upgraded BMW, you need to hold down the shift key on the Treo to enter numbers into the phone pair passphrase dialog. My problem was that I was entering LETTERS in the Treo and NUMBERS in the BMW, thinking that this would work the same way that phone dial buttons have both letters and numbers. Wrong.

After we got his phone paired, I went to the Sprint store and bought another Treo. Everything is working perfectly now.

To repeat, I suck.

Wheels and a spoiler... nothing crazy like replacing half the body panels.
